As part of the Fine Arts Signature Program at Bray, we strive to integrate Music and Arts into the core curriculum in any way we can. One such opportunity came to Mrs. Pratt's Kindergarten class during a science lesson.
Mrs. Pratt's objective was for the scholars to observe and record the different properties of an object. She chose for them to observe and sort different rocks. Scholars sorted the rocks in to different categories: rough/smooth; big/little. They recorded their observations onto their worksheets and displayed their work in the classroom. They also discussed different ways that rocks, soil, and water were useful.
Mrs. Mosley, the music teacher, was invited into their class to extend their learning through a fine arts and multicultural connection. Scholars helped Mrs. Mosley sort through the rocks again to find a rock that would work well to pass around in a circle to the steady beat. Scholars led the discussion and eliminated sharp rocks, small rocks, and heavy rocks, eventually deciding that a smooth, oval, medium size rock would be ideal.
Scholars then learned the folk song Obwisana and played a children's rock passing game from Ghana, Africa. Using the rock they picked, they sang the song that was in another language, played the game, and used their science lesson about rocks to connect to folk music from a diverse culture.
Fine Arts integration stimulates both the creative and logical areas of the mind. This provides a platform for more meaningful lessons, deeper understanding, increased retention, and active engagement for all types of learners.
