At their July 21 meeting, the Board approved the addition of 10 minutes per day for the 2025-26 school year. The change will go into effect when students return on August 11. The additional minutes will allow the district to build in three additional bad weather days. The change was recommended after feedback from the CHISD community that it was important for Good Friday to be a set holiday. It had previously been a bad weather makeup day and typically had very low attendance. The addition of the three days means that students will most likely not have to make up instructional days lost to multi-day weather events.

FAQ's

Q. Why did the Board change the start and end times?

 A. The Board received feedback from CHISD families that having to make up bad weather days made it difficult for families to plan. This was especially important to our community in regards to Good Friday.

Q. How do the additional minutes give the district more bad weather days?

A. The 84th Legislature amended Texas Education Code, §25.081 by striking language requiring 180 days of instruction and replacing this language with a requirement that districts provide at least 75,600 minutes of instruction, including intermissions and recess. HB 2610 also allows school districts to add minutes as necessary to compensate for minutes of instruction lost due to school closures caused by disaster, flood, extreme weather conditions, fuel curtailment, or another calamity. Adding 10 minutes to the school day allows for three additional bad weather days that will not have to be made up.

Q. Does this change the 2025-26 calendar the board approved?

A. No. The days that students and staff report does not change. The only thing that changes is the start and end time for schools.

Q. Does this change the report times for employees?

A. Yes. Employees will have new report times at every level. Principals may also assign additional duties as needed to help ensure a smooth transition to the new start and end times for students and parents. New staff report times are available in the Employee Handbook.

Q. WIll the times for bus routes change?

A. Yes. All bus routes will be adjusted appropriately. You can find information about your student’s routes at chisd.net by August 1, 2025.
