In October, 1903, the Texas Legislature authorized Dallas County Commissioners to subdivide Dallas County into individual school districts as soon as practicable, to establish a special school tax. Therefore, in 1904, Cedar Hill was established as an Independent ISD when it enacted a special school tax per new law. The district had four employees and six graduating seniors in the early 1900's.

In 1956, a high school was constructed on highway 67 where the softball/baseball facility is today. There were 125 students in 9th - 12th grades.

In 1972, Bray Elementary had 364 students and the town of Cedar Hill was growing rapidly. The Cedar Hill Board of Trustees approved the purchase of land on Clark Rd for $13,650 to build a second elementary school (Plummer Elementary).

In 1976, voters approved a $4 million bond to build a new high school. CHHS opened on the site of its current home in August, 1978.

In 1981, Cedar Hill ISD had an enrollment of 1,851.

High Pointe Elementary opened in 1985.

Highlands Elementary became the fourth elementary school in the District when it opened in 1987.

Waterford Oaks Elementary opened in 1990.

Lake Ridge Elementary opened in 2002.

Cedar Hill Collegiate Prep Elementary became the Districts seventh elementary school in 2015. (formerly Joe Wilson Intermediate)

In 2011, The Texas Education Agency rated the Cedar Hill Independent School District as a Recognized school district.

In 2011, The Texas State Comptrollers Office named Cedar Hill Independent School District as one of four percent of school districts in the state with a 5 star rating in its Financial Allocation Study for Texas.
