Mr. Robert E. Gillums

Hello, & Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

I am Robert Gillums, I was born and raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.   Upon graduating from high school I enlisted into the United States Air Force where I served over 20 years.  After retiring from the Air Force I decided to become an educator and earned my Alternative teaching Certification from Texas A & M Commerce.

This is my 14th year in education, and I have taught 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Mathematics.  This year I will be teaching 6th, Grade Mathematics, 6th Grade Pre-AP Mathematics, and 6th Grade Academy Mathematics, here at Bessie Coleman Middle School.

My Philosophy of Education

I believe that as an educator I am morally obligated to enter the classroom with only the highest of expectations for each and every one of my scholars.   My goal is to be aware of my scholars' emotional, social, psychological, and physical development as well as their cognitive growth.  I believe it is imperative for me to form partnerships with parents and community members to ensure the success of each scholar.  Parents and community members provide a motivational framework for each learning opportunity in the educational process.

I aim to bring an open mind, a positive attitude, and high expectations to the classroom each day.  My classroom will also be an inviting and safe place where scholars feel comfortable.  I believe that I owe it to my scholars, as well as the community, to bring consistency, diligence, and warmth to my job in the hope that I can ultimately inspire and encourage such traits in my scholars as well.
