        Starting November 16th, scholars who have selected traditional instruction will only be counted present when they are physically in class unless they have been quarantined due to COVID-19. 

        • If a scholar is absent 3 consecutive days without an excused absence in the first week of the learning period, they will be switched to Flex learning. 

        • This means that in-person scholars will no longer be able to turn in assignments by 11:59 p.m. of that day to be counted present. 

        • They must be physically present in class to avoid an absence. Quarantined scholars will be able to follow current practices to gain attendance for days they are quarantined.

        • Scholars are required to turn in work for a grade but they will not receive attendance credit if they are not physically in class.

        • Parents must turn in excuses for absences. 

        Also, we offer an asynchronous online learning model that has been approved by the Texas Education Agency. This model allows scholars at home to take classes online, known as Flex Learning. A few reminders for online learners:

        • Attendance will be taken daily by 11:59pm.

        • Lessons are available through Schoology. 

        • During the school day teachers will provide opportunities for direct instruction.

        • Scholars will also complete assignments and projects independently, at the direction of their teacher. They will have access to recorded lessons, small group virtual tutoring and support, and online materials.

        The 3rd grading cycle for middle and high school scholars starts on December 7th and between Nov. 9-13, CHISD is asking secondary families to complete this short survey ONLY if you want to change your child’s learning plan.

        During the November 2 Board of Trustees workshop, CHISD leadership introduced a plan to shift the district’s early college high school designation from Collegiate High School to Cedar Hill High School. Collegiate would then become a magnet school. This plan will affect incoming 9th grade scholars, and current Early College Academy and Collegiate students will see no changes. It gives us an opportunity to offer students a chance to earn a 2-year degree while in high school no matter what campus they attend.

        I have scheduled informational meetings tonight for Collegiate and CHHS families, and a follow up meeting for our entire community on Tuesday November 17 at 6 p.m. You can find the meeting information at

        • Most CHISD employees will work virtually on November 3, and all scholars will take their classes online that day via Flex Learning and not come to school. 
        • Attendance will be taken and scholars must complete the bell ringer to be counted present.
        • Scholars will have access to asynchronous learning on this day, all middle and high school teachers will keep office hours and elementary teachers will schedule and promote their office hours to assist scholars.
        • Special education scholars who receive lessons in a centralized unit, work-based learning kits will be sent home on Monday, November 2. 
        • The Special Education Department will do a community wellness check to scholars’ homes on the morning of November 3, 2020. They will only stop by the homes of scholars in our centralized units.
        • Our custodial staff will report to buildings to open them for polling employees and deep clean the buildings after voting ends.

        Parents, you must select a learning plan for your child for the second grading cycle; you will be choosing between online Flex Learning or in-person Traditional Learning.  Your decision for the first grading cycle will not carry over to the new grading cycle. Families who do not make a learning plan determination by Wednesday, September 23 will be automatically assigned to Traditional Learning.

        Remember, if you select online Flex Learning for the second grading cycle (Oct. 19 - Jan. 29 for elementary school scholars, Oct. 19 -Dec. 4 for middle and high school scholars), your child must remain in Flex Learning for the entire second grading cycle.  

        If you select in-person Traditional Learning for the second grading cycle (Oct. 19 - Jan. 29 for elementary school scholars, Oct. 19 -Dec. 4 for middle and high school scholars), you have the option to transfer your scholar from Traditional Learning to Flex Learning at any time.

        Hold Harmless for 1st Grading Period

        CHISD has added a Hold Harmless policy addendum to the grading system for the 1st grading period to address issues associated with possible student failure.  At this time, many students do not have access to Chromebooks, high-speed connections, or time to complete assignments due to multiple students working on a single computer.  To ensure students' success is not determined by access to technology, CHISD has created an equitable solution to help students with those constraints. Although this system is designed to bring balance and equity, Principals and teachers must hold students accountable for completing work in order to fulfill the requirements of TEA.  Listed below are the procedures teachers should follow for grading during the first marking period.




        1. Hold Harmless for the first grading period.

        All students shall be given an opportunity to Make-up/Redo any assignment until the end of the first grading period. 

        1. Flexibility in time to complete an assignment. 

        When a teacher gives an assignment, they should provide a minimum of 48 hours to complete the activity. 

        1. The 11:59 pm is established for attendance counting. 

        Students need to engage in Schoology daily by 11:59 pm to receive attendance credit. If a student fails to complete work by that time, it should not affect their grade unless it is after the 48 hour established working period. 

        1. Teachers should enter grades for assignments in a timely fashion

        Teachers should enter grades weekly. If grades are not entered, parents are not notified students did not complete work. 

        Procedure for re-opening an assignment:

        If a folder/assignment is Unpublished, it will not be accessible to students. If it is set to Publish on the start date or Published during date range, the folder/assignment and its contents will only be visible to students after or during the specified dates.

          To adjust these settings, follow these steps:

        1. Select the Materials tab from the left menu in the Course Profile.
        2. On the folder/assignment that you wish to modify, click the gear icon to the right and select Edit.
        3. In the Availability menu, choose Published, Unpublished, Publish on start date, or Published during date range.
        4. If you choose one of the latter two options, choose the appropriate dates in the calendars in the Date row.
        5. Click Save Changes to complete.


        *This addition to our policy is for the first grading period.  CHISD administration will reassess the system after the first grading period to determine if an extension needs to be made based on access and failure rates.

        Even with the excitement surrounding these events, we have taken appropriate measures to ensure the safety of our fans in accordance with University Interscholastic League (UIL) social distancing protocols.

        • Face masks for all spectators at indoor and outdoor sporting events.

        • Volleyball can only have 50 percent capacity and all tickets are being sold online and are pre-sale.

        • Volleyball fans will only be allowed to sit on the second or third levels. 

        • There are sneeze shields at each concession stand.

        • On the volleyball court, every player will have their own chair and they can only sit in that particular chair throughout the game. The chairs will be staggered over two rows. 

        • Players will be required to sanitize their hands whenever they leave and/or return to the court.

        • The CHISD Athletic Department is asking parents and other spectators to bring their own lawn chairs to the tennis match and to sit on the ledge, nearby the courts. 

        • Fans must wear a face covering during the indoor or outdoor competitions.

        The Parent Schoology Access Code will be emailed to families before the end of this week. For now, we encourage you to use your scholar’s login to navigate Schoology. If you have not already, I suggest you check out Schoology Central for tips and instructions on working in our online learning management system. 

        Cedar Hill ISD elementary schools are offering synchronous learning for the first weeks of virtual learning. This is completely optional for families and scholars, but it is one way to assist during the transition to in-person instruction next month. Synchronous learning refers to all classes in which scholars and teachers are in the same place, at the same time, in order for learning to occur. 

        This includes live online meetings when the entire class or smaller groups are able to get together. Your child’s elementary teacher will email a Google Meet link so that your child may access live instruction. The schedule will also be added to Schoology. 

        Our middle and high school teachers have scheduled in-person live teaching lessons and office hours to provide support for scholars. Each teacher has been asked to send families their availability and access information. 

        A special ‘thank you’ to the generosity and dedication of our CHISD staff members who personally delivered household Chromebooks to families who requested devices. CHISD continues to work with our vendor as we await for our shipment of new devices. I assure you that this is simply a delay and that all scholars will receive a Chromebook. But in the meantime, we are distributing one (1) device per household.

        When it comes to browsing the web for school-related work, CHISD recommends using the Google Chrome browser for all district programs and sites such as Schoology, MyCHISD, and Google Meet. If you are having difficulty with any internet browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Safari), make sure it is updated to the latest version. We strongly recommend that you do not use Microsoft Internet Explorer.

        CHISD is launching a COVID-19 Dashboard so that our scholars, staff and families have the most current information on positive cases affecting the District. If you would like to receive a push alert each weekday with the latest COVID-19 numbers, please download the free CHISD mobile app.  The district app includes COVID-19 information, Skyward Family Access, a district staff directory, calendar of events and more. The free app is available on the Apple and Google Play platforms.

        The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture has announced that school districts can continue to offer free breakfast and lunch meals to children 18 and under through December 31, 2020. 

        What does this mean for you? CHISD can continue to serve free meals to all children through our Grab and Go Meals and Longhorn Lunches to Go. There will be no need to show proof of income or pay for breakfast and lunch when virtual learning begins on Tuesday. This unprecedented move will help ensure that no matter what the situation is on-the-ground, children will have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

        CHISD will start the first 4-weeks of school 100% online with Flex Learning. 

        The Distirct is exploring hybrid learning possibilities for a limited number of scholars, whose courses require in-person training, access to technology or special equipment that can only be provided on campus. We are also developing a plan to provide in-person support for scholars in our special education contained program.  As we finalize these plans, we will communicate them with our families. 

        This latest decision is based on a strong recommendation from Dallas County Health and Human Services after a thorough examination of multiple factors. Those factors are data-based and rely on the principles of epidemiology and science. At this time, with the continued high number of COVID-19 cases a return to in-person learning could result in an increase in the number of virus transmissions among our children. 

        During our four weeks of virtual learning, CHISD teachers and staff will report to their respective campuses to provide instruction as our staff are able to safely social distance during this time.

         Chromebook Delivery Update

        On July 23, the CHISD technology department ordered Hewlett Packard 11.6 inch touch screen Chromebooks for every scholar. You can view a picture of the devices our scholars will receive attached to this email. 

        CHISD has been notified by our vendor that there will be a delay in the delivery of our ordered devices due to COVID-19 related issues stopping or slowing production.  We apologize for this inconvenience, but it is likely that we will not receive the devices until after classes resume. We assure you that this is simply a delay and that all scholars will receive a Chromebook.  To be proactive and ensure our scholars have access to technology when the school year starts on September 8; CHISD plans to utilize our current inventory of Chromebooks to provide one device per household to families who have selected Flex Learning as their learning option or are in need of a device.  When the new devices arrive in October, we will identify another date, time and location to distribute Chromebooks to every scholar.

        Governor Abbott Waives Grade Promotion Requirements For 2020-2021 STAAR Testing

        AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the grade promotion requirement related to the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test for students in grades 5 and 8 has been waived for the upcoming school year. Typically, school systems must take into account a student’s score on the STAAR test to determine whether the student can be promoted to the next grade level. The traditional A-F rating system will remain in place, albeit with certain adjustments due to COVID-19.

        The Cedar Hill Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to adjust the 2020-2021 academic calendar.

        The first day of classes will be Tuesday, September 8.

        The revised start will allow time for training all staff on our flex learning platform and sanitizing procedures; ensure all necessary technology resources are available to deliver flex learning properly as well as planning and preparation of instructional arrangements for a variety of possible scenarios. In the coming weeks additional back to school information will be shared with families and our community. This is a fluid situation and our leadership staff and the Blueprint Task Force is working hard to address questions, provide resources and plan for we are able to safely open our campus doors.

        Returning Student Registration Postponed to August 17, 2020

        Registration for the 2020-21 school year has started for new to district students and Pre-k scholars. Due to the change in the school calendar, returning student registration will start on August 17, 2020.

        Board Approves Plan to Provide Chromebooks to Support Flex Learning

        CHISD will provide a Chromebook for every scholar and teacher in the district.

        This will achieve the district’s goal of one device per scholar (1:1) and to aid in instruction for Flex Learning. Schoology, the district’s Learning Management System (LMS) will house the district’s instructional materials and academic lessons.

        CHISD will lease 3,345 Chromebooks for grades PK-5th, 4,845 Chromebooks for grades 6th-12th, and 450 Chromebooks for every teacher.

        The total cost of the scholar and teacher Chromebooks with licenses is $1,885,891.50.

        Dear CHISD Community,

        Like many of you, the Cedar Hill Independent School District would like a return to a semblance of normalcy. But we will only move toward that direction if we can provide a safe environment for our scholars and staff.

        With the current rise in COVID-19 cases in Dallas County and in our state, we believe it is in the best interest of scholars and staff to return to the classroom at a later day. Therefore, during Monday's regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting, we will present a revised school calendar that reflects school starting after the Labor Day holiday. If approved, the first day of classes will be Tuesday, September 8.

        The revised start date will allow time for training all staff on our Flex Learning platform and sanitizing procedures, ensuring all necessary technology resources are available to deliver Flex Learning properly, as well as planning and preparation of instructional arrangements for a variety of possible scenarios.

        We have made this decision in unison with our fellow districts in the Best Southwest Region (DeSoto ISD, Duncanville ISD and Lancaster ISD).

        We are grateful for the Texas Education Agency, which is allowing flexibility for districts across the state, with regard to planning a safe and successful return this fall.

        During this meeting, we will present the revised calendar and our full reopening plan titled “The Blueprint: Plans for Reopening CHISD.” Following Monday's meeting, we will update our families and staff on the calendar changes and make the reopening plan available to the public.

        On Tuesday July 7, 2020; Cedar Hill ISD administration and school districts across the state received guidance from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) on what districts must do when welcoming scholars and staff when the fall semester begins. You can read more about the guidance here.  

        The state is requiring school districts to offer online learning (Flex Learning) and face to face instruction. Because of the latest guidance from TEA, CHISD will not explore the hybrid learning model and will focus on providing rigorous instruction online and engaging traditional learning with the highest level of safety in mind.

        Beginning on June 29, and running through the month of July, the Cedar Hill Independent School District will adjust the hours and locations of its “Grab & Go Meals” due to the demand for meals during the summer.

        The new schedule for meal pick-up will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at Cedar Hill High School (Door #14) and Plummer Elementary School (Door #3).

        The District will not provide weekend meals during this time.

        Depending on the return of the 2020-2021 school year, CHISD will provide additional details for “Grab & Go Meals” for the month of August and beyond.

        Starting Today, April 20, we will begin “Grab & Go” meal distribution on Mondays and Wednesdays only. Scholars will be able to pick up the meals for the week on those days. This change will allow us to continue to serve our scholars meals while decreasing the number of times families have to leave their homes. Pick-up times and locations remain the same. 


        In addtion to weekday meals, Cedar Hill ISD will start providing weekend meals to families as well. Families have the opprotunity to pick-up a Grab & Go meal on Fridays from 11 AM - 1 PM at Cedar Hill High School only starting April 24.

        We are proud to announce that we will begin offering dinner meals and will expand our services to a fifth campus location (Highlands Elementary School) starting on Monday, March 30.

        CHISD will distribute lunch, dinner and the next day’s breakfast between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the following campuses. Please pay attention to the door numbers listed below:

        During a challenging time, it always helps to hear from a familiar voice. Starting on Monday, March 30, our Cedar Hill ISD teachers will begin reaching out to scholars and their families on a weekly basis. I know our staff is looking forward to checking in with our families and scholars and I believe this outreach will be beneficial to all involved.

        During this challenging time, we understand the importance of families having access to their scholar’s prescription medication that is currently stored at the school. That is why we will have a Cedar Hill ISD nurse at four campus locations from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, March 20) to coordinate medication pick up. Parents must show proof of identity (driver’s license or other valid form of photo ID) in order to pick up the medication for their scholar.


        Here are the pick-up locations: 

        High Pointe Elementary School – 1351 High Pointe Lane

        This is the location for pick-up for Bray Elementary, Ninth Grade Center, Lake Ridge Elementary, High Pointe Elementary and Collegiate Academy and High School families.


        Plummer Elementary School – 1203 S. Clark Road 

        This is the location for pick-up for Collegiate Prep, Highlands Elementary and Plummer Elementary families.


        Bessie Coleman Middle School –  1208 E. Pleasant Run

        This is the location for pick-up for Waterford Oaks Elementary and Bessie Coleman Middle School families.


        Cedar Hill High School – 1 Longhorn Blvd.

        This is the location pick-up for Permenter Middle School and Cedar Hill High School families.

        Pre-K and Kindergarten Roundup previously scheduled for Saturday, April 4 has been postponed.

        The CHISD Support Program (SP) is a voluntary, work-based program that offers free and confidential emotional assistance and counseling to scholars and families experiencing issues related to COVID-19.

        The CHISD Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based program that offers free and confidential assessments, short-term counseling, referrals, and follow-up services to employees who have personal and/or work-related problems.  The district is launching this program to provide support and direction for staff who are having difficulties in response to the COVID-19 virus.

        CHISD has implemented a COVID-19 Form

        Cedar Hill ISD is continuing to monitor travel advisories and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and County Health Services. The COVID-19 outbreak is a concern for anyone considering travel or traveling at this time. Those with travel plans are strongly encouraged to closely monitor travel advisories and guidance from the CDC. We respectfully ask CHISD families and staff who have traveled internationally, including cruises, to please consider completing this form. Information collected will remain confidential, and families and staff should expect follow-up communication from your campus administrator.

        To support the health and safety of our scholars UIL has suspended all UIL sanctioned contests through March 29. CHISD will not have any practices or rehearsals until further notice.

        During the district closure Cedar Hill ISD will be serving sack breakfast from 7:30 a.m.- 8:30 a.m. and a sack lunch from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. each weekday to anyone under the age of 18 at Plummer Elementary (door #3), High Pointe Elementary (door #11), Bessie Coleman Middle School (door #15) and Cedar Hill High School (door #12). Parents will pull up to the location and meals will be handed to them in their car. All meals will be provided at no cost and will be prepared with the strictest of sanitation standards.

        The SAT exam previously scheduled for tomorrow, March 14 at Cedar Hill High School for all juniors is CANCELLED and will be rescheduled.

        All Cedar Hill ISD athletic events have been cancelled until further notice.

        ALL scheduled out of state field trips have been cancelled until further notice. Campuses and department leaders should move forward with securing reimbursements from organizations if possible.

        • Out of an abundance of caution, the district will not approve new requests for international travel until further notice.
        • New requests for out of state travel will not be approved until further notice.
        • For in-state field trips, the district will proceed with caution and all requests for new in-state field trips will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis with special attention being placed on trips requiring air travel, events held in closed spaces, or events with 250 or more participants.

        Due to the March 11th announcement by the World Health Organization that the Coronavirus has been declared a pandemic, Cedar Hill ISD is extending its spring break for an additional week. Scholars should report to classes on Monday March 23, 2020. Staff should report to work on Monday March 23, 2020 unless notified by their immediate supervisor.

        The district is also offering free breakfast and lunch to anyone under the age of 18 living in Cedar Hill ISD boundaries starting on Monday March 16th. Breakfast will be provided from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Plummer Elementary School, High Pointe Elementary School, Bessie Coleman Middle School and Cedar Hill High School.

        Cedar Hill ISD is implementing the SAFE LONGHORN HOTLINE starting on Sunday March 15, 2020 at 12 p.m.  CHISD families and staff are asked to call (469) 272-2020 for information on the district’s response to the Coronavirus and for self quarantine information.  

        CHISD staff will operate the SAFE LONGHORN HOTLINE from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday March 15th and during regular business hours (M-F 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) starting Monday March 16th until further notice. Spanish speaking staff will be available to provide support.
