What is the difference between STEAM academies and traditional classrooms?
STEAM academies give students a hands-on approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Students will receive all the required knowledge and skills as required by the state, but will have their academy focus as the context for learning.
How do I apply?
There are two steps to apply: attend a parent information session, and complete the online application.
When can I apply?
Applications will be accepted between Feb. 1 – March 4.
When are the parent information sessions?
Parents must attend a mandatory information session for each academy their student is interested in pursuing.

What are the academic eligibility requirements?
Current CHISD students - average of 75 or higher in all core classes (ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science) and met standard on the most recent Math and ELA state assessments (STAAR)
Prospective students - an average of 80 or higher in all core classes (ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science) and met standard on the most recent Math and ELA state assessments (STAAR)
How will students be selected?
Students applying to either academy will be selected based on established criteria. A lottery will be conducted if the number of students who meet the required standards exceeds the number of spots available in each grade level.
When will I be notified?
Students will be notified of their status the week of April 3rd.
My child is not enrolled in CHISD. Can we still apply?
Yes, Cedar Hill ISD is a selective open-enrollment District; therefore, students residing outside the attendance boundaries of CHISD may apply.
Do the academies require tuition?
No, both academies are tuition-free.
If my student is interested in both academies, do I submit two applications?
No, only one application is required, but you will need to note your first and second choice.
What if my child is not selected?
Students who meet the established criteria and are not selected will be placed on a waitlist for the 2017-2018 school year.
If my child currently attends Coleman, do we still need to apply?
Will academy students follow the same schedule as traditional students?
Yes, academy students will follow the same academic calendar as the district. The school day will begin and end at the same time as traditional classes.
Do I need to apply if my student wants to attend traditional classes at Coleman?
No, students who do not wish to be part of the academies can attend the schools within their primary residence attendance zone without submitting an application. However, standard enrollment procedures should be followed.
