• In August 2017 the district opened the Bessie Coleman Middle School Environmental Science & Engineering Academy and the W.S. Permenter Entrepreneurship & Design Academy.

    Incoming sixth and seventh graders receive hands-on learning and challenging coursework. Enrollment in the tuition-free academies is by application only. Students in Cedar Hill and surrounding communities are eligible to apply. Only 100 students will be accepted into each academy. The small learning community gives students the opportunity to work with those who share similar interests and work ethic.

    The Environmental Science & Engineering Academy offers an, interactive learning environment for middle school students. Instruction includes hands-on activities and will combine physical, biological and computer science into their core classes. Through field experiences, competitions, and real-world problem solving, students learn about science and engineering careers, and boost their creative, communication, and leadership abilities.

    Additionally, the academy introduces students to those who are already working in the science and engineering fields. Students learn about what it takes to become a scientist or engineer, and the benefits of each career. In an ever-changing job market, careers in these fields are always in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for individuals in these industries begins at $82,000 per year.

    The Entrepreneurship & Design Academy offers an interactive learning environment for middle school students who are self-driven, creative and have an ambitious spirit. Their core classes include real-world problems that highlight the ups and downs of business ownership. They make prototype businesses and learn to work as a team. Additionally, students learn web and graphic design and how to work with clients. They advance their collaboration, presentation and leadership abilities through field experience and competitions.

    Future entrepreneurs and designers benefit from working with those who already own a business or are in the design industry. Students discover opportunities and learn about the academic requirements and lifestyle options each career provides.
